October 22, 2018 Update

A quick update for everyone not following the Facebook group.  I recently had a kidney biopsy on the 16th to check for rejection.  They did not like where my creatinine was sitting, roughly 1.8, when normal range is about 0.5 to 1.5.  The lowest I had hit was 1.5 while still in the hospital after transplant.  I did get up to 2.1 at one time as well.  The biopsy results show no rejection and no toxicity from the tacrolimus (one of my anti-rejection medications).  So that is great news!  There are many reasons why my creatinine could be higher.  Some include the tacrolimus itself, size of kidney vs my size (female kidneys tend to be smaller, I’m a male and bigger), muscle mass & exercise, diet, hydration, and many other reasons.  The 1.8 may just very well be my baseline creatinine, which is okay.

Now we are moving forward with looking into another medication called Belatacept to replace the tacrolimus.  There are benefits such as less-noticeable side effects, and it would be a once a month infusion.  I was told the infusion takes about 30 minutes.  The tacrolimus can have many side effects, including toxicity to the new kidney.  The hope is aside from lessening side effects is to lower my creatinine and hopefully get “more life” out of the new kidney with less risk.  I am in discussions with my team about this and will update accordingly.

Everything else is going well otherwise.  Our baby Winry will be arriving on November 16th, 2018.  Sarah cannot wait and is definitely ready for her to come out!  We are all excited to see her!  We also adopted a rescue dog, her name is Lola and she is an American Eskimo Dog.  She is the sweetest and we are working on training her as she is only six months old.  She learns quickly and is very smart!  I made a promise to my family to get a dog after transplant as we’ve been wanting one for some time.
